The fairy godmothers were gathered for little Elijah's christening. There was good
food in abundance, the bubbly flowed freely and everyone enjoyed themselves very
much. When it was time to give their gifts, the blue fairy kissed the baby on his
downy cheek and promised, "He will have the most beautiful blue eyes, the most
perfect skin and the most kissable mouth ever." And it was so. A fairy dressed in a
pink tutu came next. She waved her wand over the child and intoned, "He will have
the talent needed to become a great actor." And everyone ohhhed and ahhhhed.
Then it was lavender fairy's turn, and she gave little Elijah a sweet personality, good
sense and the ability to inspire love in everyone.
Suddenly the door burst open, and the black fairy stamped in, scowling horribly. She
hadn't been invited because she didn't have any manners, and was awfully put out
about it. She bent over the cradle and cackled gleefully. "An actor, eh? We'll see
about that!" she cried. Goddess only knew what she had intended, but just then
Baby Elijah batted his beautiful thick lashes at her and cooed, and she hesitated,
feeling the magic begin to do its work.
"Er - all right! But he'll be short! He won't be leading man material for sure, so
there!" And she folded her arms and glared about her triumphantly.
Little Elijah's eyes filled with tears, and his rosebud mouth quivered.
"And what's wrong with being short, I'd like to know?" The green fairy stalked out
from behind her sisters, drew herself up to her full three foot six inches and
frowned. She patted the baby's dark hair and said comfortingly, "There, there, ducky,
I haven't given my gift yet. Everything will be fine. Sure, you'll be short, but you'll be
perfectly made, strong and fearless, and nothing will ever faze you." There was a
flash of lightning and the obligatory rumble of thunder, and everyone (except the
black fairy) sighed with relief.
For so it was, and so it came to be.
